The Pyraminx is a tetrahedral (four-sided pyramid) twisty puzzle invented by Uwe Meffert in 1970 and introduced as a WCA official event in 2003. Unlike the Rubik's Cube family, the Pyraminx has four trivial tips (the small corners) and four non-trivial edge and center pieces. It is one of the fastest-growing WCA events and produces some of the most exciting sub-1 second results in competition. JrTimer generates official WCA Pyraminx scrambles for your training.
The Pyraminx has 4 face layers, each identified by a vertex letter (U, L, R, B for the four corners). The tips are trivial ??they do not affect the rest of the puzzle and should always be solved first. The main solving objective is to orient and permute the 6 edge pieces and 4 corner pieces correctly. Moves are denoted as U, L, R, B (clockwise 120簞) and U', L', R', B' (counterclockwise).
The Pyraminx single world record is 0.72 seconds by Dominik Gorny (Poland), and the average world record is 1.30 seconds by Tymon Kolasinski (Poland). The Pyraminx regularly produces sub-1 second results in elite competition due to its relatively low algorithm count. Common milestones: sub-15 seconds (beginner), sub-8 seconds, sub-5 seconds, sub-3 seconds, and sub-2 seconds for competitive-level solving.
Top competitors use puzzles such as the MoYu RS Pyraminx M, YJ MGC Pyraminx M, or Cubicle Labs Valk Pyraminx M. A well-adjusted magnetic Pyraminx enables smooth, fast rotation with minimal risk of misalignment during high-speed solves.
