3x3 Blindfolded (3BLD) Timer ??Official WCA Scrambles & BLD Guide

3x3 Blindfolded (3BLD) is one of the most intellectually demanding WCA speedcubing events. Competitors memorize the entire scrambled state of the cube, put on a blindfold, and then solve the cube entirely from memory without looking at it. The total time includes both memorization and blind execution. A DNF (Did Not Finish) is recorded if any piece is out of place when the blindfold is removed. JrTimer provides official WCA 3BLD scrambles for your training sessions.

3BLD Solving Methods

  • Old Pochmann (OP): The classic beginner BLD method using Y-permutation for corners and T-permutation for edges, with buffer pieces cycling through the puzzle. Simple to learn, uses only 2 base algorithms, but is slow due to its high move count and limited efficiency.
  • M2/OP: Combines M2 (a highly efficient slice-based method) for edges with Old Pochmann for corners. M2 dramatically reduces edge execution time compared to pure OP, making this a popular intermediate-level BLD method for sub-5 minute solving.
  • 3-Style: The dominant competitive method. Uses optimized 3-cycle commutators for both edges and corners, cycling three pieces per algorithm execution. With 3-Style, world-class solvers can execute corners in under 6 seconds and edges in under 8 seconds, enabling sub-20 second total BLD times.

Memorization Techniques

  • Letter Pairs: Assign a letter to each sticker position, then memorize the sequence of letters as word pairs using memory associations (e.g., "AR, LT, GU" becomes memorable images or words).
  • Audio Memo: Whisper the letter sequence aloud during memorization to reinforce auditory memory ??effective for competitors who struggle with pure visual memorization.
  • Method of Loci (Memory Palace): Advanced memo technique placing letter pairs in distinct mental locations along a familiar route, enabling reliable retrieval during blind execution.

World Records & Training Goals

The 3BLD single world record is 12.00 seconds by Tommy Cherry (USA), and the mean-of-3 world record (all three solves must be successful) is 14.66 seconds by Max Hilliard (USA). The 3BLD mean-of-3 format means any single DNF results in a DNF mean, making consistency as critical as raw speed. Common milestones: first successful solve, sub-5 minutes, sub-2 minutes, sub-1 minute, sub-30 seconds.

Tips to Improve Your 3BLD Times

  • Focus on memo accuracy before execution speed ??a DNF is always slower than a slow successful solve
  • Drill 3-Style commutators until you can generate them on the fly for any sticker target without referencing a sheet
  • Practice letter pair memorization separately ??keep a list of words/images for all 325 possible letter pairs and drill them until instantaneous
  • Learn to identify twisted corners and flipped edges during memo to avoid wasted algorithm executions during blind execution
  • Use JrTimer's timer to record your total time including memo ??then split analysis between memo speed and execution speed
