5x5 Rubik's Cube (Professor's Cube) Timer ??WCA Official Scrambles
The 5x5x5 Rubik's Cube, famously known as the Professor's Cube, is an official WCA speedcubing event that scales up the reduction solving strategy from the 4x4. Unlike the 4x4, the 5x5 is an odd-layered cube with fixed center pieces, meaning OLL parity does not occur ??though edge parity (a single pair of twisted edges) can still appear. JrTimer generates genuine WCA 5x5 random-state scrambles for rigorous training.
5x5 Solving Methods
- Reduction Method: The standard approach. First, solve all 6 centers (each center has 9 stickers on a 5x5). Then, pair all 12 edge trios (each edge consists of 3 pieces on a 5x5). Finally, solve the resulting pseudo-3x3 using your standard method. Edge parity (two edge trios swapped) requires a specific fix algorithm if it arises.
- Yau5 Method: Adapted from the 4x4 Yau method for the 5x5. Start with the two cross-adjacent edge trios, solve all four remaining centers, then complete the remaining edge pairing and 3x3 phase. Reduces redundant moves by integrating cross solving into the reduction phase.
- Hoya for 5x5: As with the 4x4, the Hoya approach adapts well to the 5x5 with an efficient two-opposite-centers start before completing the remaining four centers.
Edge Parity on the 5x5
Unlike the 4x4, the 5x5 does not have OLL parity. However, it can develop edge parity: a state where exactly two edge trios are swapped in a way that is unsolvable without a dedicated parity algorithm. This parity fix is straightforward to learn and takes approximately 8??2 moves to resolve.
World Records & Competitive Goals
The 5x5x5 single world record is 32.33 seconds by Max Park (USA) and the average world record is 36.39 seconds, also by Max Park. Max Park holds world records across multiple big cube events, making him one of the most dominant big cube solvers in WCA history. For most competitive solvers, sub-3 minutes is a beginner goal, progressing through sub-2 minutes, sub-1:30, and eventually sub-1 minute for advanced competitors.
Tips to Improve Your 5x5 Times
- Plan your center solving order before starting ??identify which centers can be solved with the fewest wide-move rotations
- Practice pairing edge trios efficiently: aim to pair each trio in under 5 seconds to hit sub-1 minute averages
- Memorize the edge parity algorithm so it takes under 3 seconds to execute when it occurs
- Use JrTimer's Ao5 and Ao12 to track your consistency, which is more valuable than chasing lucky singles
- Drill your 3x3 stage separately to ensure the pseudo-3x3 phase is not slowing down your overall time
Recommended Hardware
Top 5x5 competitors use magnetic puzzles such as the MoYu EQY 5x5 M, YJ MGC 5x5 M, or GAN 460 M. A smooth-turning, well-tensioned 5x5 dramatically reduces the chance of lockups during fast center and edge solving.
